Southport Station

The photos below were downloaded years ago and the original source has been lost – if you know where they’re from, let me know so it can be properly attributed (and permission requested).

Interestingly, on a map from 1878 the station could have been in Labrador, roughly where the Grand Apartments (and before that, the Grand Hotel) now stand – a deep water area that would have been a logical freight interchange.

The Southport Transit station is roughly on the old station location, and as you can see from the curious land plot boundaries, there’s a curved path toward High Street. The remains of the concrete turntable were still present when I moved to the Gold Coast in 1989, but are now lost.

In the “Images of Yesteryear” photo there was always a dogleg in Railway Street to the east (right) of the image. There were lots of shunting tracks immediately in front of the station; the track past the station was narrower, hence the street moved back south.
